Šibenik
Šibenik is the oldest autochthonous Croatian town on the Adriatic. It stands out with its unique position on the slopes of hills on the northern side of a picturesque and wide bay, the best protected natural port of the Adriatic, on the mouth of Krka River, which is connected with the sea by the Strait of St Anton.Today, Sibenik is the capital of the county of Sibenik-Knin with a population of 51.553 inhabitants (2001). It is an important cultural, educatinal and economic centre. The town of Sibenik has an extremely important position in transportation and good traffic connections.
The city is dominated by the ruins of St Michael’s fort, on one of its hills, from which you will have a wonderful view all over the town, its port and the srrounding islands, till Murter.
Very important is the Cathedral of St Jacob, that has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO (2000). The church, the very symbol of Šibenik, is one of the most important holy buildings from the period between Gothic and Renaissance. Near to the cathedral there is the Lodge, headquarter of town council during the venetian domination, completely restored after the Second World War. But if you want to have e real idea of Šibenik, you must walk through the narrow and colourful streets of the old city, with its houses and palaces in venetian style, shops, cafés and restaurants.
